Synopsis

Part 1: Collecting and presenting expert opinions

Expert Opinion is frequently used in PBAC submissions to provide information where observable data is not readily available.  The critical choice of main comparator and the description of “before” and “after” treatment algorithms often rely heavily on expert opinion. It is therefore crucial to collect and present this information in a way that is acceptable to the PBAC.  As with all methods of data collection, the outputs are only as good as the inputs and methodology used.

This example driven session

  • Will review when expert opinion may be useful in a PBAC submission;
  • Describe the PBAC requirements for the collection and presentation of expert surveys;
  • Present ideas for how to collect the right data from the right people and
  • Show how time spent upfront in designing and collecting your survey can pay dividends in the ease of analysis and presentation of results.

Learning Objectives

  • To appreciate when the collection of expert opinion may be necessary in support of a PBAC submission.
  • To understand the methodology and requirements for collection of expert opinion, as outlined in the PBAC guidelines.
  • To gain familiarity with various methods for collecting expert opinion and their strengths and weaknesses.
  • To collect tips and tricks on designing, testing and administering surveys to improve response rates and data quality.
